Custom Japanese Knife Handle - Ancient Bog Oak

This is an octagonal Wa Style Handle made for Japanese style kitchen knives.

The body is made from 1000 year old bog oak with a spalted maple ferrule

Bog-wood, also known as morta, especially amongst pipe smokers,is a material from trees that have been buried in peat bogs and preserved from decay by the acidic and anaerobic bog conditions, sometimes for hundreds or even thousands of years. The wood is usually stained brown by tannins dissolved in the acidic water.

Medium sized, it is suited for 240mm Japanese knives. 

Weight: 48g Length: 140 mm (5.5”)

Handle is sanded to 600 grit and then coated in 5-6 coats of sealer for longer protection.

Care :

  • Hand wash with soapy water and towel dry.
  • Do not put in dishwasher, nor soak in water for long periods of time.
  • Oil on a fairly regular basis, or sand with 0000 steel wool and reapply a sealer like tru-oil as needed.
